Shield Bearer

It’s been ages since I posted anything on this blog. Life has a funny way of getting busy and staying busy. In any case I’ve had a few ideas for general gaming articles and some more home-brew creations. This is stuff that’s separate from the Known World but should be usable in any campaign.

“Tactical Templates” can be applied to nearly any DnD monster and combined with strategic choices to make encounters more engaging without a full monster redesign.

The first template is the Shield Bearer which can be applied to any humanoid threat at any CR to add a little bit of flavor while adding a cooperative theme to your monstrous horde.

Shield Bearer

Theme: A threat that uses a massive shield to aid their allies.
Required Equipment: Large Shield
Suggested Equipment: Heavy Armor
Suggested Tactics: Stand in a line or ring around Ranged Allies and take the Dodge action until engaged in Melee. Always stand with other Shield Bearers and never leave ranged allies unprotected.

Abilities:
Shield Wall. Any ranged attack that enters your threat range (5’ radius in all directions) has disadvantage. Does not work on attacks that target you directly.

Actions:
Shield Bash. Melee Weapon Attack. + (Prof + Str) to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: (1d8+Str) bludgeoning damage. A target struck by this attack must make a Strength Saving Throw (DC 8+Prof+Str) or be knocked 10’ directly away from the Shield Bearer.

Reactions:
Shield Ally. If a melee or ranged attack targets an ally within 5’ of you, you may use your reaction to give that attack disadvantage. You cannot use this on attacks that target you directly.

Hobgoblin Shield Bearer

Armor Class: 18 (Chain Mail, Shield)
Hit Points: 11 (2d8+2)
Speed 30’
Str 13 (+1) , Dex 12 (+1), Con 12 (+1), Int 10 (+0), Wis 10 (+0), Cha 9 (-1)
Senses: Darvision 60’, Passive Perception 10
Languages: Common, Goblin
Challenge: ½
Martial Advantage. Once per turn, the hobgoblin can deal an extra 7 (2d6) damage to a creature it hits with a weapon attack if that creature is within 5 ft. of an ally of the hobgoblin that isn’t incapacitated.
Shield Wall. Any ranged attack that enters your threat range (5’ radius in all directions) has disadvantage. Does not work on attacks that target you directly.
Actions:
Shield Bash. Melee Weapon Attack. +3 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: (1d8+1) bludgeoning damage. A target struck by this attack must make a Strength Saving Throw (DC 11) or be knocked 10’ directly away from the hobgoblin.
Reactions:
Shield Ally. If a melee or ranged attack targets something within 5’ of the hobgoblin, the hobgoblin may use their reaction to give that attack disadvantage. The hobgoblin cannot use this on attacks that target them directly.

Design Notes: This creature is intended as a must deal with wall between the players and ranged targets.
